Enjoy the beautiful coastal scenery whilst the guide drives the big wagon, pulled by strong sled dogs along the path to the west of Longyearbyen.
You will be collected from your hotel, and driven to the start point not far from Svalbard Airport Longyear, where the dogs will be waiting eagerly for your arrival. If you like, you can help the guide to harness the 12 - 14 dogs who will be leading the tour today, and attach them safely to the line used to pull the wagon. The barking and howling may seem somewhat chaotic, but suddenly everything changes. In an instant, as the dogs start to run, they become completely silent. Fully focussed on the task at hand, the dogs pull the wagon ahead, so that you can focus on enjoying the fantastic landscape around the coast of the Arctic Ocean towards Bjørndalen, the bear valley.
Keep your eyes open - wildlife is often seen in this area! If you are lucky you may spot Svalbard reindeer, polar foxes, Svalbard grouse, seals and maybe even walrus or whales. During the summer there are often large pods of belugas (white whales) off Vestpynten. Birdlife is also very common, including little auks, Arctic terns and Arctic skuas. We will travel a good distance from the town, and in clear weather the views over the Isfjord are incredible. You can even spy the massive glaciers on the other side of the fjord, and gain an understanding of how small we really are in the mighty Svalbard landscape. After about one and a half hours of dog sledding, we will head to Greendog’s kennel in Adventdalen. Here we can relax with a hot drink in the cosy log cabin at the yards, and enjoy some cuddles with the newest litter of puppies.
We can loan you an exposure suit, as long as you request this at least a day in advance. We recommend that you dress warmly in any case, with thick and warm woollen underwear, warm trousers and a solid jacket.
